Procedure for Founding a Holy Name Society Chapter
John F. Bradley, Past NAHNS President
  • You will need to secure the permission of your pastor in order to establish the society in your parish. In order to obtain his permission, you will have to know some facts before approaching your pastor. The following are relevant points of information:
  • Charter: All Holy Name Societies should be chartered by the Dominican Order. For information about obtaining a charter click here.  The standard donation for a charter is Ten ($10.00) Dollars. You would not seek the charter until after receiving permission from your pastor.
  • Holy Name Starter Kit: This is a packet of several publications essential to the newly-forming Holy Name Society. Included are books such as "Handbook for Holy Name Officers", "Handbook for the Priest-Counsellor", and other useful documents. To obtain this "Starter Kit", you would contact the Supply Officer for the National Association of the Holy Name Society. His name is John Chaklos, 719 Port Carbon Rd., Pottsville, PA 17901-8624. Phone: (570) 429-0581  E-mail: rrjack@evenlink.com . The cost of the Starter Kit will be Fifteen ($15.00) Dollars. You should consider obtaining a Starter Kit before speaking with you pastor. In this way, you will have the opportunity to read over the materials, and become familiar with the Holy Name Society, so that you may answer any of your pastor's questions.
  • Holy Name Supplies: Once you have a Society "Up and Running", you will wish to purchase certain supplies, such as Holy Name pins, medallions, pledge card calendars, perhaps even a banner. These supplies may also be obtained from  A complete Supply Catalogue is available on our website.

  • Holy Name Newsletter: We publish a National Newsletter. For a subscription, please contact NATIONAL HOLY NAME NEWSLETTER EDITOR Michael D. Gores, 7429 Hidden Valley Trail So., Cottage Grove, MN 55016-1863. Home: (651) 458-8142.  E-mail: NAHNS@Nomensanctum.org Subscriptions are $10.00 for one year, and $18.00 for two years, and are available to the public. Our newsletter is an excellent way to know what is happening in the Holy Name Society throughout North America. You will probably wish to obtain 1 subscription now, but once your society is functioning actively, you can purchase additional subscriptions "in bulk" at a discounted price. You may also subscribe to our Newsletter via our website.
